Washington fashion advice for appearing on television

Boring. Boring. Boring. Boring. Oh – and Fox News would like you to wear a tie, please. this from The Hill newspaper:

“Men have to get it right, too. They “can’t wear a suit that’s purple,” [Fox News' Megyn Kelly] says, but a purple necktie or one with patterns is good. A blue shirt looks exceptionally good on TV — Bill Hemmer, Kelly’s co-anchor, “has about 30 different shades of blue for ties and they all look great,” she says.”

Sure. And Bill Hemmer also looks like “the frat boy most likely to be left behind naked at the grocery store during Rush Week.”

“On last Sunday’s “Meet the Press,” Richard Perle, former chairman of the Defense Policy Board, wore a blinding orange tie with a matching leather watchstrap. Didn’t work.

… And forget about going sleeveless. “I object to seeing any armpits on air. I don’t need to see that.”

That’s sleeveless for women, I hasten to point out. No-one needs to see Richard Perle in a sleeveless blouse.

Toronto Fashion Advice for Appearing in Your Next Passport Photo

Don’t wear a red and white-striped blouse for your photo. In fact, reconsider the colour option entirely; revert to black and white.

(Those five years of appearing to look like an inmate to various customs officials in several parts of the world proved some of the most humiliating travel experiences of my life. In general, it was probably my most horrific passport photo. Current one is black and white. Boring. Boring. Boring. Boring. Yes, but reasonably acceptable. Fashion-wise, some circumstances demand it be better to err on the side of boring.)

Three years to go until the next appearance….

    Ha!

Personally, I always followed the advice “never wear plaid if you’re going to appear on television” – which is why, everytime I accompanied a client to a television interview, I wore plaid.

That way, they could never back out and leave me facing the camera.

Ha! Your plaid might have got you on camera for the Red Green Show.

American friends were visiting in the fall of 2005 when the show taped its final episodes. They are big fans (why?!), so I told them how to get tickets. They reported back that the audience was awash with plaid. Alas, they didn’t think to pack plaid (actually, very doubtful they owned any), so they didn’t make it on camera for Red Green posterity. YOU could have been a plaid contender….

“Lo, it is nearly 350 years that we and our fathers have inhabited this most lovely land, and never before has such terror appeared in Britain as we have now suffered from a pagan race, nor was it thought that such an inroad from the sea could be made. Behold, the church of St. Cuthbert spattered with the blood of the priests of God, despoiled of all its ornaments; a place more venerable than all in Britain is given as a prey to pagan peoples.”
